The Omni Groups makes great, robust apps for OS X and iOS. Fans of the Omni apps will be pleased to learn that the company has released OmniPresence, its take on document syncing in the cloud. Instead of iCloud sync or Dropbox, The Omni Group has built its own solution using open standards like WebDAV and Apache.

Now files saved in OmniOutlinerOmniGraffle, and OmniGraphSketcher on the iPad can be effortlessly synced with their Mac counterparts, and vice versa.

Omnipresence runs as a menu bar app on the Mac that works similarly to Dropbox. You select a directory on the Mac to act as the home base for syncing files between apps. A free Omni Sync Server account can be used to enable OmniPresence across apps on OS X and iOS, or users can setup their own server for hosting. The open nature of OmniPresence allows for easy collaboration within a team of people sharing the same folder. Changes instantly appear across all connected apps, and OmniPresence intelligently manages conflicts.

The iPad apps have been updated with Omnipresence support, and the experience is very much like saving documents to iCloud in Apple’s productivity apps, like Pages and Numbers. Third-party developers can choose to build Omnipresence into their apps as well as an alternative sync solution.

Omni app users previously had to manually export or send files to and from iOS and OS X. OmniPresence is a welcomed addition. You can learn more on The Omni Groups’s website.
