Smart Food Scale Makes iPad Even More Kitchen-Friendly

You already have a connected scale for tweeting your weight. You might also have a baby scale to do the same, (only for the baby). Now you can get a smart scale for dinner. Not to eat for your dinner–to weigh your dinner. Or breakfast. You know what I mean.

The Smart Food Scale is a Kickstarter project and comes from Chef Sleeve, the folks behind the Chef Sleeve, the ultimate wipe-clean iPad prophylactic.

The $99 scale works like any other digital scale, with tare and hold, and selectable units. And it adds a Bluetooth radio which lets it work with a companion app on your iDevice. You will be able to weigh ingredients and have them logged in the app, which will present you with a calorie count and nutrition info based on USDA numberrs.

And of course there’s lots more. The combo of weight and software could lead to anything, including say an app that calculates the cook time of your freshly-mixed cake depending on the weight of your ingrediants.

I wonder if it’s worth the trouble, though. Last summer I spent months weighing every single gram that passed my lips. Literally every drop of olive oil diblled onto my toast, every shot of espresso and every tiny, long-savored square of chocolate was logged by weight into the My Fitness Pal app. The hardest part of this? Looking up the foods themselves. The weighing was easy, and better done with pen and paper: who wants to tap their iPad’s screen to look up ingredients as they load up the blender with fruits for a smoothie?

And here I get the idea behind this smart scale: if you use your iPad more in the kitchen, then you’re more likely to buy a bag of overpriced, environmentally-malignant plastic bags to protect it.
