Yahoo’s New Weather App For iPhone Is Here, And It’s Absolutely Gorgeous

Yahoo! has just released a stunningly beautiful Weather app for the iPhone. It’s a beautiful piece of digital art, fusing two of Yahoo’s best remaining properties — their weather service, and the photo-sharing group Flickr — into something lovely that manages to not just give you a forecast of the weather of the city you’re in: it also captures some of that city’s soul.

Yahoo! Weather’s genius touch is that it isn’t just a weather app: it’s also a photography app. Depending on what city’s weather you’re viewing, Yahoo! Weather won’t just pull in the temperature and conditions… it’ll pluck from Flickr an actual photograph of your town, a picture that was taken when your city matched the conditions prevailing outside. It matches the time of day too: if you check your forecast on a cloudy day at night, for example, the Flickr photo would also be an overcast night shot.

That’s a lovely piece of digital prestidigitation in its own right, but Yahoo! Weather also managed to be one of the more full-featured weather apps out there. Swipe down on your forecast and you can see hourly and five day forecasts, a verbal weather report, a satellite map of prevailing conditions, precipitation forecasts, and beautifully animated graphics for prevailing wind and pressure conditions, as well as where the sun and moon are in their cycle.

What a beautiful app. Between this and the latest Flickr app, Yahoo! is really starting to reassert its mobile chops. Let’s hope they keep it up. You can download Yahoo! Weather at the link below for free.
