LaunchBar power-users should get their virtual asses over to developer Obdev’s nightly builds page and grab the latest version of v5.5. Amongst a whole bunch of neat fixes and tweaks it adds one essential new feature: support for your iCloud documents.

iCloud is fantastic in many ways, and awful in others. When I reinstall an iCloud-enabled app on my iPad I love that its preferences and settings are just there. I also love apps that sync using iCloud, because it really is seamless. But I don’t like the ghetto that iCloud documents live in on my Mac, buried somewhere in my ~/Library folder.

The latest Launchbar fixes this, adding an entry that lets you browse any of your iCloud-saved documents and open them wherever you like. It’s not all good news so far – the documents are shown and sorted by name and folder, which means that the weird naming conventions that exist inside iCloud are exposed to the light, where they emerge blinking and incomprehensible.

Still, it’s a start. The new beta also brings better support for iTunes and contacts, as well as Voiceover. Yes, now you can browse your entire computer, and use all the familiar LaunchBar shortcuts, all using the built-in Voiceover service. It’ll even tell you the title, artist and duration of iTunes songs.

This is just about the closest we have gotten to the computer in Star Trek.
