Another World (or, originally, Out of This World) is available on Steam for Mac now for ten bucks. The game has been likened to a proto action/platformer game, having been released in 1991, and then ported to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), the Sega Genesis, and the Apple IIGS in 1992. It’s a cult classic, exhibited at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, and you can grab the 20th Anniversary version for Mac now on Steam.
The new version has high-def graphics and remastered sound effects for the modern computing era, along with a new difficulty system, letting you play the game at an easier (or harder) level than the original. Yes, you can still play using the original graphics, you purist. The 20th Anniversary Edition also has a making-of video and a development journal, which will let you dig into the making of the game as well as playing through it.
You’ll play as Lester Knight Chaykin, a physicist genius who works on particle accelerators, trying to figure out the mysteries of the universe. As luck would have it, lighting strikes Lester’s lab just as he’s engaging the accelerator, opening a hole in time and space, sending Lester off to a barren alien planet. You know, like always.
Lester is eventually captured by some aliens and escapes with the help of an alien buddy, cleverly named, “Buddy.” The two must then avoid capture while platforming and shooting their way through a host of platforming puzzles and environments to survive. It looks to be great fun, and a great way to experience the birth of a genre.
