Rego is an app that answers the question “How do I remember this place?” It’s a question partially addressed by Foursquare’s check-ins, and also by Evernote’s location-aware notes. But Rego goes further than both, letting you save places you’ve been to, places you find, and places you have never even seen.
First, the app isn’t about telling anyone else where you are. You can share your places via Twitter, message, mail and so on, but this is an addition. The main purpose of the app is to let you drop a pin in a map, add photos and notes, and organize these things.
It’s about as easy as could be. To save a new place, tap the + button, give it a title and save. You can zoom and pan the map to find places near or far, or you can have it find your current location. There’s no search, unfortunately, so you’ll have to add Rome to your wish list with zoom and drag.
Once you have saved a place, you can add notes and photos. And because this is 2013, you can add filters to the photos. Annoyingly, the app crops your pictures to a square format, an arbitrary and dumb decision it seems to me: I already have Instagram for that.
Places can be organized into collections, and you can browse by collection but not share all the places in that collection at once.
Sharing itself is pretty neat. Once you choose a place to share, you can pick which notes and photos (if any) you want to include, and then a link is generated. This takes the recipient to a Rego web page. Once there, the viewer can even click to import the place into their own Rego.
Possible uses: Planning a trip, keeping a travel diary, bookmarking a restaurant you went to/walk past. Remembering where you parked your car. Keeping a collection of local stores. Making a wish-list of places you want to visit.
You should totally try Rego. It’s iPhone-only, and it’s free if you only want to save ten places (and use one photo filter). Upgrading will cost a one-off $0.99. I’m currently trying to work out a way to get Rego places into my home-rolled Journal, and I’ll let you know somehow if I manage it. I’m currently thinking about using it with a dedicated, private Twitter account, plus RSS and IFTTT, but we’ll see.
