Get Battery Usage Information Right On Your iPhone or iPad [iOS Tips]

Battery iPhone

Battery life in the iPhone age, right? It’s a conundrum we’ve all had to adjust our behaviors for. Before the iPhone, I can remember going days, maybe even a week or so in between battery charges. The advent of an iPhone in my life brought with it a new behavior – charging it every night. I use my iPhone for almost everything these days, including getting around town, communicating with loved ones, and checking email while out and about, so it makes sense that the battery drains quickly.

There are a few third-party apps out there that keep track of your battery usage for you. Turns out, though, if you just want a quick looksee at how much life you have left in your iPhone or iPad’s battery, you can look in the iOS Settings app itself.

Tap the Settings icon on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, and tap into the General section. Then, tap on the Usage area, and scroll down a bit, past the data and telephone usage areas. You’ll see a section titled “Time since last full charge” there, with both the number of hours and minutes you’ve used on the battery since the last charge up. There’s also a calculation of how long your iOS device will last on Standby.

If you want to get a sense of how long your battery lasts, charge it up overnight, to 100%. Unplug and be scrupulous about not topping up the charge during the day and evening. When you get to less than 10% battery charge, you can tap into this area and see how long your battery lasted on this one charge. Track this data over time, and you’ll have a pretty good sense of how well your battery is doing, on average. Cool, right?
