Google Releases Local Discovery App ‘Field Trip’ For iPhone

Even though Apple and Google hate each other now days, that hasn’t stopped Google from making some really great apps for the iPhone. Google’s latest creation just hit the App Store today and it’s focused on local discovery.

Field Trip has previously been an Android-only app, but Google is bringing it to the iPhone today for free. The app is kind of like Google Now. It runs in the background and then automatically alerts you of interesting information in your area based on location data.

Rather than using data from social media sources, Field Trip pulls information from publications like Thrillist, Cool Hunting, Arcadia, Run Riot, Sunset, Inhabitat, Daily Secret and more. The app also informs users of deals that are nearby, as well as interesting architecture, historic places, restaurants, art, and other unique locations.

Once you install the app and log into your Google account, you can customize which sources you want to use, and the app runs in the background with automated alerts.

Apple hasn’t baked any local discovery alerts into iOS yet, so Field Trip really feels like an advertisement for the Android experience of Google Now. You can pick up the app for free from iTunes.
