Google updated its Chrome browser for iOS on Monday to introduce a number of small but helpful features, including quick access to your browsing history, and webpage sharing. But those who updated on jailbroken devices are finding that the app now crashes shortly after starting up, rendering it unusable.
If you’re one of those users, you’ll be pleased to know there is a simple fix. Here’s what you need to do.
There are two ways to do this. There’s a long-winded option that’s actually easier to perform, or a quick fix that’s a little trickier. We recommend trying the quick fix first, then performing the long-winded process if you can’t get it working. So here’s the quick fix:
- Open Google Chrome and then perform the following steps as quickly as possible:
- Tap the menu button alongside the address bar, then select Settings
- Tap the Privacy tab, and then select Send Usage Data
- Set to ‘Always’, and then tap done
You have to be really quick to perform these steps, because you need to do them before Chrome crashes. If you can’t quite get it, here’s the long-winded option:
- Uninstall the Google Chrome app
- Reinstall the Google Chrome app
- Open it up and during setup, you’ll be asked whether you’d like to send usage statistics to Google. Ensure you check the box and then tap ‘Accept & Continue’
Again, you need to do this before Chrome crashes — but because the process is simpler, you have plenty of time.

Not everyone’s comfortable with sending their usage statistics to developers, but unfortunately, this is the only way to use Chrome on a jailbroken iPhone until Google fixes the issue. And given that it’s only affecting jailbreakers, that could take some time; we may even see a third-party fix in Cydia before an official one comes along.
