Square, the mobile payment startup that lets you pay for your coffee with an iPhone app, has announced a new product for small business owners. Since Square already specializes in helping merchants use the iPhone and iPad to process payments, the company is launching what it’s calling a “Business in a Box.” The package includes an iPad stand, cash drawer and optional receipt printer. It lets Apple’s tablet totally replace a traditional cash register.
The free Square Register app in the App Store handles all of the actual mobile payment processing. If you’ve ever paid for something with Square, then you know how it works. You can swipe your credit card with a Square card reader or use the Wallet app on your iPhone to pay. Starbucks recently partnered with Square to let smartphone users wirelessly pay from many of its U.S. locations.
For $299, merchants can buy a Business in a Box with two Square card readers, a Heckler WindFall iPad Stand, and an APG Vasario 1616 cash drawer. More information is available on the Square website.
