Track All Your Stuff On Your Mac Using Your iPhone With Home Inventory

Sure, it's boring, but way better than not knowing what you have when you need to.
Sure, it's boring, but way better than not knowing what you have when you need to.

Yep, you heard it right. Home Inventory is the boringly-named Mac app that will let you create and manage an inventory of the items in your home, using your iOS device as a photo input device. Sounds cool, right? Well, ok, but it at least sounds interesting, yeah?

Keeping track of your stuff is pretty useful, especially if you have to fill out an insurance claim or police report in case of theft. Home Inventory will keep all of it in a database, easily accessible from your Mac or iOS device via a free standalone app, the equally cleverly named Home Inventory Mobile Backup.

Better yet, there’s a second mobile app you can put on your iPhone to take photos of all your stuff in order to add it to the Home Inventory database while you walk around your home and yard, making it super easy to collect info about your stuff in the first place without having to drag your Mac around to do it. Heck, the iOS app even supports barcode scanning.

The Mac app will track all the important info about your things, including photos, receipts, and warranty details. You can record your insurance policy information as well, to make sure you have enough coverage, and add dated notes to track repairs and such. There’s even several reports you can run on your things to make sure you can get the info you need to the people and organizations you need to, and you can always backup your data as a csv, a fairly common database format.

Home Inventory is $20 in the Mac App Store, and the companion apps are free. There’s a free trial of the Mac app as well, right at the Binary Formations website.
