A number of Apple executives, including Vice President for Education John Couch, met with Turkish president Abdullah Gül today to discuss a deal that could see the iPad introduced to Turkish education. The Turkish government’s FAITH project was set up to put more than 15 million tablets into its schools at an estimated cost of around $4.5 billion.

Gül visited Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino last May to discuss the FAITH project, which could soon include the iPad, according to Turkish blog Elma Dergisi. Elma Dergisi was first to report that Apple executives were in Turkey today, and it also republished the picture above, taken from the President’s PR office.

It’s unlikely Apple would turn down the opportunity to be part of a $4.5 billion project, of course. But as far as we know, negotiations over the iPad are still under way. One of the things Apple must address first is the layout of the Turkish “F-keyboard” on iOS devices, which has several keys located in the wrong position.

Apple has plans to open its first retail store in Turkey, and it has recently been looking for staff in Istanbul. The company also launched its iTunes Store there back in December, opening up its vast library of music to local residents for the first time.
