Facebook promised that their updated Facebook Messenger app would allow iPhone users to call one another for free thanks to the magic of VOIP calls. The feature has been rolled out to other countries, but Facebook just rolled it out to the U.S. today.
The Free Call feature allows you to call any of your Facebook friends who are also using the Facebook Messenger app. Rather than using the minutes on your cellular plan, the calls are made using your data connection so you’re not using up any minutes.
If you’ve been grandfathered into an unlimited data plan this means you can essentially get unlimited calls now too. If you don’t have unlimited data, you might want to be judicious with how often you use the Free Call feature.
To use Free Call, just install the Facebook Messenger app. Go to your friends list, tap on the person you want to call, then hit the info button in the upper righthand corner. On the contact info screen you should see an option for “Free Call.” Tapping on Free Call will initiate a call using VOIP, and your friend will get a notification on their iPhone that you’re trying to ring them.
We tested Free Call out this afternoon and it works really well on both the office WiFi and LTE, but we imagine things get shaky if you’re stuck on 2G data speeds.
