The second-generation Nest thermostat has begun reaching Apple retail stores across the United States and Canada just in time for Christmas. Designed by Tony Fadell, a former Apple employee who’s often referred to as the father of the iPod, the Nest thermostat is an intelligent device that learns exactly how warm or how cool you like your home to be at different times during the day. It can also be controlled remotely via your computer or iOS device.
The second-generation Nest is around 20% thinner than its predecessor, and promises to support 95% of low-voltage heating and cooling systems in the United States. It also has a slightly updated look that’s even more beautiful than before, with all of its components encased into a solid stainless steel ring.
“In the past year, we’ve accomplished a number of notable milestones, from having Nest thermostats connected – and saving money and energy – in every U.S. state and across Canada to achieving best-seller status at Lowe’s, Amazon and Apple’s online store,” said Fadell, Nest’s CEO.
“Our mission is to keep people comfortable in their homes while helping them save energy, and with the next-generation Nest Learning Thermostat, we’re able to spread that comfort and savings to even more homes – and to help higher-efficiency systems perform the way they were meant to.”
