Geekbench benchmarks for the new iPod touch prove Apple has made lots of improvements to the fifth-generation device, with its dual-core A5 chip making it significantly faster than its predecessor. When compared with iPhone performance, however, the iPod touch is lagging far behind.
Despite the same 800MHz processor, the new iPod touch is still slightly slower then the iPhone 4S, and not even half as fast as the iPhone 5.
The iPod touch, which has 512MB of RAM, scored 617 in the latest Geekbench tests, a big improvement over the 378 points scored by its predecessor. It’s also faster than the original iPad, which scores 454 — but didn’t quite meet the iPhone 4S, which scores 653.
As for the iPhone 5, the new iPod touch doesn’t even come close. Its dual-core A6 processor, clocked at 1300MHz, means it scores a whopping 1572 in Geekbench tests, far more than any other iOS device. Only the third-generation iPad comes remotely close, with 823 points.
While the new iPod touch may look like a great alternative to the iPhone 5 for those who don’t need the phone, then, it’s hardly going to provide you with the same experience. While the device certainly isn’t sluggish, there will be a noticeable difference at times — especially when it comes to gaming.
