Did you know that “rucksack” is German for rucksack? Neither did I, until I just made a guess and wrote it down. And Fabric Horse’s new Rucksack Luxe (Luxus, in German) sure is a Luxe sack for your back (Ruck, in German).

Confused? Don’t worry, it’s only going to get worse. Fabric Horse (Stoff Pferd, in German) makes bike-related apparel and bags, and makes them in Philadelphia (not Germany). The Luxe is fashioned from their signature waxed canvas, and works as not only a big bag, but a commuter bag and even a carry-on pack for planes (suggested destination… you guessed it

The inside is one big cavern, with a few small pockets and an optional padded laptop sleeve for anything up to a 15-inch MacBook Pro. Outside are a U-lock holder, a water bottle pocket, detachable cross straps for securing bigger loads, and a sternum strap.

In short, everything you need to get you through a day in your home town, or walking around a foreign city as a tourist. Maybe Berlin, which is very bike-friendly.

I have bought a few Fabric Horse bags in the past, and found them to be very well made. And that’s a good thing, as they ain’t cheap (everyone who says that Apple should start manufacturing iPhones in the U.S. take note) at $285, plus another $50 for the MacBook sleeve. Available now, in tan, black or gray.
