Macro Photography Shoot-Out: iPhone 4S Versus iPhone 5

Lex from Modahaus got in touch to let us know about this post on their blog, comparing the macro photography capabilities of the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5.

The differences are small, and in some cases hard to see at first glance. But they are there, even though the technical changes to the camera in the 5 are minimal. What these comparisons (and others, elsewhere) show is that even small changes to the technology can have an impact on the image output.

Take the ruby and amethyst rings above. The iPhone 5 image has shows deeper, richer colors in the gemstones. And take a close look at the diamonds surrounding them: in the iPhone 5 image, the larger diamonds have more of a “glint” (I’m sure there’s a technical jewelry term for that) than they do in the corresponding iPhone 4 image. Check out the original post for more examples and comparison images.

Concluding, Lex says:

The iPhone 5 jewelry photography performance is a worthwhile improvement on the iPhone 4S.

But adds that more macro lens attachments would be helpful. Be patient, Lex: I have no doubt that lens attachments of pretty much every size, shape and variety imaginable are coming to a store near you in the very near future.
