Which Country Pays The Most For The iPhone 5?

The iPhone 5 quietly went on sale this morning across twenty two additional countries, but not everyone is paying the same amount of money for their iPhones, between exchange rates and local taxes. In fact, according to Setteb.it, Americans pay the least amount of money overall for the iPhone 5, while overseas, those in Hong Kong get the second-best deal around.

Royally shafted? Italy, which pays as much as €949 for a 64GB iPhone 5, unlocked and unsubsidized. That same phone costs almost 25% less in the United States. Someone up there’s smiling down on us Yanks.

I can see at least one error right away. The iPhone is listed as being only slightly more expensive in Canada, when in fact it’s more like 35-40% more because of both the currency difference, the 10% or so extra Apple puts on most Canadian products (for some unknown reason), and the fact that all our contracts are three years instead of two.

You may be correct about the extra charge by Apple as well as the length of service contracts. But the currency difference is no longer a factor when comparing the Canadian and US dollar. (Recently, their strength has been nearly identical).
