Apple Fourth Biggest PC Maker in U.S.

Apple has pushed past Toshiba to become the fourth largest PC maker in the U.S., according to new numbers from research firm Gartner.

Apple earned 6.6 percent of the PC market in Q1 2008, and saw 32.5 percent year-on-year growth in unit shipments, Gartner said. Overall, the PC market grew 3 percent year-on-year, Gartner said.

Apple trails Dell (31.4 percent market share), Hewlett-Packard (25 percent) and Acer (9.1 percent). While Dell grew 15 percent year-on-year during the quarter, Acer slipped 18.3 percent, Gartner said.

Acer is only 2.5 percentage points ahead of Apple, and Apple is positioned to regain the number-three slot, which it hasn’t held since the mid-nineties.

    The presence of Apple outside US and UK is ridiculous. That’s why they are note in the top five and will take a long way to be there IMHO.

    Apple is totally focused on offering more and more stuff to Americans and British, I don’t think they really think in going internacional for real

    Should the headline not read “biggest PC seller in the US” as they don’t make any in the US? As far as I know their PC’s are made in Asia.

    What would Acer’s sales be without Gateway? Since GW was a top-ten seller, I’d gamble that stripping them out would move Apple to number three.

    Antonio – One reason Apple lags in other countries is the protection offered to the local Apple distributors. For better or worse, depending what is more important to you, protecting the local distributors keeps many local companies in business. But at the expense of local customers who might otherwise afford an Apple. Both sides have valid arguments, but it comes down to the oft debated “open market” conditions.

    Charel – Semantics (they’re all PC makers, and they all sell in the US), but your phrasing is more precise.
