If you’d shown me the Hi-Call a few years ago I would have ridiculed it and moved on, probably forgetting that this stupid Bluetooth glove even existed. Now, though, in a world infected with “sanitation engineers” so in-demand that they have Bluetooth headsets wedged permanently into their ears, and idiots wander the streets holding their in-line mics up to their mouths as they speak, the Hi-Call from Hi-Fun doesn’t seem so dumb after all.
The Hi-Call, discovered by friend of Cult of Mac Daniel Piccinelli at IFA in Berlin, is a pair of gloves with some additions to the right glove. It has a battery, mic, speaker and Bluetooth radio. And yes, the mic is in the pinky and the speaker in the thumb, making the glove into an Inspector Gadget-style finger-phone.
Now, imagine the situation. It’s cold. You are too cool to go anywhere near a Bluetooth headset (admittedly not an over-high bar to set), and your iPhone rings. You’re wearing gloves, so you can’t even answer the thing. What do you do?
You stick your thumb in your ear and start talking to your little finger. What else?
Everyone wins: you get to keep your hands warm, and your phone stays safe in your pocket. Passersby don’t have to see either a weirdo who appears to be chatting to himself or a moron with a BT headset on his ear, and Hi-Fun gets to make some money and spending it on Highs and Fun.
It’s not a mere gimmick, either. The maker claims three hours of talk time and 20 hours standby time, and the glove is controlled by three buttons on the wrist, so presumably making calls and controlling Siri are also possible. Price and availability are tba.
