Secure enterprise file sharing and sync service kitedrive comes to the Mac.

Secure enterprise file sharing and file management vendor Accellion has added Mac support to its file sync system for mobile workers known as kitedrive. As we noted earlier this year in covering the launch of kitedrive for iOS, Accellion describes kitedrive as “Dropbox for the enterprise.” That’s a pretty good description. kitedrive syncs content for offline access to business documents, which are securely encrypted during transmission and while stored on the a mobile device, PC, or Mac.

kitedrive allows the ubiquitous access to files and documents as well as the automatic backup and collaboration features that have made public cloud services like Dropbox so successful. Having developed secure file sharing solutions for a number of years, Accellion ensures that synced data is secure and that an audit trail of file and document access exists – providing a significant security advantage over many public cloud services.

That security advantage and functionality similar to the cloud services that many users prefer over traditional network file shares, make kitedrive a very solid solution that IT departments can present as a secure alternative to public cloud services. Being a secure solution, kitedrive complies with a number of government and industry standards for secure data access and storage.

Accellion provides a range of monitoring capabilities that IT administrators can use to track and manage access to confidential resources. The app also integrates with mobile management solutions and enterprise systems including data leak protection (DLP) solutions that ensure that file synchronization is not only secure and tracked, but also monitored and filtered based on corporate policies.

In addition to a new Mac client, Accellion also announced to additional data management options for kitedrive users.

  • Selective Sync – Lets users choose which files they want to sync for mobile use
  • Scheduled Sync – Lets users determine how frequently data on a device is synced (intervals can be set between one hour and one day)

Accellion offers kitedrive in three variations – a personal secure document storage and sync option for individuals, a service for small to mid-size firms (those with 500 or fewer employees), and a solution for larger enterprise organizations.

In addition to iOS and OS X, kitedrive clients are available for Android, BlackBerry, and Windows 7.
