How To: Jailbreak Your iPhone/iPod Touch Using Blackra1n

George Hotz a.k.a GeoHot has released the Mac version of blackra1n, his 1-click jailbreak solution. Just like the Windows version, it is pretty easy to use and worked perfectly with my iPod Touch 2G and iPhone 3G. Besides the tool, there’s a blackra1n application that gets automatically installed on the iPhone after jailbreak, which gives you option to install Cydia and some other alternatives like RockYourPhone and Icy.

Here’s see how it works.

Ingredients:

  • An iPhone / iPod Touch (any model)
  • Blackra1n tool available at blackra1n.com
  • iTunes 9.0.2
  • A wireless internet connection (to install cydia etc.)

Now, let’s get started with the procedure:

1. Download the blackra1n tool and double-click to open it.

2. Make sure your iPhone / iPod Touch is attached to the Mac / PC and click ‘make it ra1n’. NOTE: This will NOT unlock your iPhone (enabling it to be used with other carriers).

3. Blackra1n will tell you that the device is booting into Recovery Mode. Check the device’s screen and it should turn off and then show an iTunes logo with cable, indicating it is in Recovery Mode.

4. A few seconds later, you will get an image of GeoHot on your device’s screen. The Blackra1n program on your Mac / PC will request you to donate to GeoHot, click ‘OK’. Now it will tell you to wait, till the device reboots. You can now close the program.

5. After the device reboots, make sure you have an active internet connection on it.

6. Navigate to the last page of the device’s springboard and open the blackra1n app.

7. Now select any or all of the three installers and tap on ‘install’ button in the navigation bar. It will now download the desired application(s) and then re-spring (refresh).

8. After the device re-springs, you will have the selected application(s) installed. Congratulations! You’re now successfully jailbroken.

Optional:

9. If you want to remove the blackra1n application from the device, open the application again and tap ‘Uninstall blackra1n’, this will NOT undo the jailbreak by any means. The device will now re-spring and you will no longer have the application.

    not a comment just a question i had gotten mine jailbreaken but i lent it to a friend andi forgot to tell him not to turn it off and i came bck n it was off i tried to turn it o but i cant i tried to make it rain but wont let me plzz sum1 help me i dont want to go through the whole process again anyone help

    Dear Sayam,

    I got my iPhone 2 yrs back and unlocked using Ziphone which was a breeze. Upgraded to 3.1.2 and jailbroke my iphone 2G about 6 months back using blackrain since Ziphone did not work this time. I do not remember using redsnow but my phone just started working after I used blackrain. It’s working fine in most respects but has the flwg issues:

    1. Can not access itunes store as it says “The iTunes store is not available in this country”
    2. Maps is not able to determine location. It used to work fine and could determine location before the upgrade.

    Any simple fixes?

    I did the make it ra1n part, then it said the recovery mode is in, then.. a message popped up on my itunes saying my ipod has entered recovery mode and i need to restore, so i did.. then after, my ipod still wasnt jailbroken. then it said my jailbreaking was finished, (but there was no sign of it being jailbroken) and the make it rain picturee of that guy nvr popped up, just the ipod cabble did. the pop up said i needed to reboot, (i didnt know what that meant) so i went on youtbe to find out, and it said i needed to press the home button and sleep button at the same time for 8 seconds, so i did… a few times. and now my ipod wont even turn on anymore!!! :| HELP!!! pleeeassseee:) btw i have an ipod touch 2g

    Guys if youre experiencing the ITUNES/USB screen problem on the iphone,or so called the iphone freezing problem,here`s the solution:

    After installing the correct firmware on your iphone through itunes (note : firmware 3.1.3 will not be recommended,3.1.2 is far better yet thers no huge difference among those two),

    Launch blackrain on your PC or on your MAC and hit `make it rain`,IF youre being directed back to the itunes and `recovery mode problem`just click ok on it and ignore it.Your blakrain application will crash,just click ignore.

    And for the last step,RE-Launch blackrain and hit `make it rain`,You will see geohot`s pic on your iphone/ipod touch then your device will reboot itself automatically and finally the jailbreak will be over.
    hope this works for you as well.

    I had no problems installing blackra1n and i had a jailbreak real fast. yet whenever i turn it off and thenback in, i have to tether it and then run the blackra1n.exe again. at that point it comes back. BUT BUT BUT… everytime i turn the phone off and then turn it on.. or reset it.. i get the plug into itunes message upon power up.

    I can get it to work everytime… but kinda scary thinking that if i dont have my laptop with me and i need to power off and on… im screwed… no phone….

    is there a fix for this specific issue?

    thats just not good enough… one shouldnt have to do the above every power cycle?

    anyone find a fix for this?

    lemme know.. until then.. im just going back to nonjailbroken.. that power off thing suxx.

    On mine geohot doesn’t appear at all but it gets to the part before then goes to a dark blue screen. I have jailbroken mine but I used spirit now I want to redo it please help.

    When i try to jailbreak my ipod touch 2g 3.1.3 the picture of GeoHot wont come up and the screen of my ipod turns black and thats all. btw i have a MAC and does it matter if my itunes is 9.1.1. Please help i have been trying to jailbreak my ipod for over a week.

    My ipod ran out of battery, when i tried blackra1n it was normal and restarted again with everything on there. But now when i try use blackra1n, it says it can not find ASL.dll and the process does not work.

    I’m having the same problem as most of the people. After I got my ipod jailbroken, all it shows is the “connect to itunes” screen! On itunes it says detected a recovery mode and it said i should restore. I go ahead and press “Restore” and it says I cant get it restored. Can someone please help me how to fix this? >:(

    Hey Sayam,

    i got my unlock iPhone 2g 2yrs back, today i upgrade my iPhone version as i dint know about it. now it says “the SIM card inserted does not appear to be support” i saw ur suggestions in this issue. i tried to unlock my iPhone by using “blackra1n”..bt stil not been able to unlock my iPhone. blackra1n will stop working after saying “done, wait for reboot”. i tried it more than 50 times..

    i follow every instruction which you given above, Blackra1n app wont show up on my iPhone 3.1.2 its said that is has been jailbroken but it wont show up on iPhone
    plz help me dear…

    Greetings, please help me! i tried to jailbreak my ipod with blackra1n and everything was going fine until it said ‘done, wait for reboot’. its taking FOREVER!!! also the guy didn’t pop up on my ipod. is that a problem?

    Is it possible to have Blackra1n on your iPod WITH the 9.2.0 (or whatever) download on it? Because I really like the new update and I’m not so sure I would want Blackra1n on it unless I could have the update. Please help :)

    I ”jailbreak” my ipod when it is still at ios 3.1.3. What would happen if I update the ios to 4.0.2? Would there be any problem updating the software after you ‘jailbroken’ your ipod/iphone??

    it wont make it past the make it ra1n button. it just frezes like that and my itunes says i need to reboot.
