Gallery: 20 All-Time Great iTunes Album Covers

2. Giant Squid – The Icthyologist

I’ll confess I know nothing about this music of Giant Squid, but this is one of the coolest pieces of album art I’ve seen this year, so it’s in the collection!

1. The Appleseed Cast – Sagarmatha

Shown here is an alternative cover to the 2009 release by Lawrence, KS band The Appleseed Cast. It shows somewhere lurking beneath the incredibly uninspiring ‘official’ cover approved by the band’s label there lies beating a creative heart that harkens back to what this old timer believes was a musical and artistic heyday, back in the time when psychedelia and expanded consciousness were considered necessary parts of the journey through life. On top of which, I just think it looks cool.

So, there it is. I may have overcompensated for my tendency to revere older music by frontloading much more recent album art that, frankly, ought to be required to age a bit before being included in a list of ‘all-time greats’ — in fact I’d like to take back that Wilco selection right now, but I’ve got to get this damn thing posted.

We hope you’ve enjoyed the gallery and our selections and we hope you’ll make your suggestions in comments below.
