It’s widely know that that the MagSafe 2 connector found on the new Retina MacBook Pro likes to sever its connection at the slightest chance. But who cares, right? After all, if it comes loose, you just plug it back in – it’s not like it’s the cable to your boot drive or anything.
I’ll tell you who cares: Lukas Mathis. Lukas didn’t notice his weak Mag”Safe” connector disconnecting, and the result was a cracked and ruined Retina screen.
A couple weeks back, Lukas’ cable made yet another break for freedom and popped out, only to give up the escape attempt and flop lazily onto the speaker by the Mac’s keyboard. Lukas – presumably distracted by the beauty of the high-res display – shut the lid without seeing the pathetic emo version of Apple’s previously hearty adapter laying there, and crunched the screen down to make a splintery sandwich of the stupid t-shaped throwback.
Worse, Apple doesn’t yet know how to fix the thing. Lukas says that “the people at the Apple store said they couldn’t yet repair or replace Retina screens. This was on June 30. The broken MacBook is still sitting on my desk, waiting for Apple to figure out how to repair it.”
Ouch. We knew that Apple wasn’t keen on the likes of you and me repairing the fancy new MacBook Pro, but its own engineers? That’s a little hard to swallow.
