Sprint Reduces iPhone 4S To Just $149, Waives Activation Fee For Online Orders

Sprint has a warehouse full of iPhone 4S units it needs to shift before Apple announces the new iPhone in September, which is great news for consumers. If you don’t plan on picking up the sixth-generation device later this year, you can now grab its predecessor for just $149 with a two-year contract. And if you buy online, Sprint will waive the $36 activation fee, too.

That’s a reduction of $50 ($86 if you’re buying online) off of Sprint’s original pricing, and there’s a good chance similar deals will follow from AT&T and Verizon in due course.

It’s looking increasingly likely that Apple’s new iPhone will be unveiled on September 12, and it’s likely to launch a week later. The Cupertino company has already admitted that rumors surrounding the device are tarnishing existing iPhone sales, and so it’s unsurprising that carriers are slashing prices in an effort to move their stock.

But is it a good time to buy? Well, maybe not. If you’re after the latest and greatest iPhone, it goes without saying that you should hold onto your cash for a few weeks and grab the new iPhone in September. It’ll be more expensive, but it’ll be worth it.

If you’re not interested in the sixth-generation iPhone, but you still want a new iPhone, it’s probably still a good idea to wait — if you can. The iPhone 4 is likely to replace the iPhone 3GS this fall to become the cheapest iPhone in Apple’s lineup, which could see it go completely free on some plans. And in turn, it’s likely the iPhone 4S will be even cheaper, too.
