If you have a tendency to drop your expensive gadgets, and you’re looking for something a little more robust than the iPad, you should probably check out Google’s new Nexus 7. According to this drop test from warranty provider SquareTrade, Google’s $199 slate handles drops and water damage better than the new iPad.

SquareTrade both tablets from chest height, and then pushed them both off a table. The devices were then dropped in a bath tub full of water.

In the first and second tests, the iPad’s display shattered, and sustained some damage to its aluminum rear casing. In comparison, the Nexus 7 took quite a few scuffs and scrapes to its plastic backing, but its display remained intact both times.

In the third and final test, both tablets were submerged in water and rather surprisingly, came out functional. Most electronics would be dead almost instantly in this case. The iPad’s speakers did fail, but there was no noticeable damage to the Nexus 7. Of course, this could change over time as that water makes its way around the tablet’s insides.

Not only is the Nexus 7 significantly cheaper than the iPad, then, it’s also slightly more robust. So if you’ve got butterfingers and you just can’t hold onto your gadgets, your next tablet should probably be from Google. Though I think I’d still prefer an iPad with a sturdy case.
