Even though the iPhone 4S didn’t come with a radical new design and a few features customers were hoping for, it was still Apple’s most popular iPhone ever. During the first quarter of its availability, Apple sold over 37 million iPhone 4S units, but analyst Gene Munster says Apple is going to murder than number and sell at least 80 million iPhone 5’s.
80 Million is a lot of freaking iPhones, so how did Gene come up with that number? Munster’s firm surveyed 400 phone owners and asked them if they are planning to buy an iPhone as their next phone. 65.5% of respondents said yes, and of those, 51% said that they will be buying an iPhone 5 as soon as Apple launches it. Munster then used those percentages, along with his estimation for the current number of iPhone owners and summized that Apple has 80million iPhone sales “in the bag.”
94.2% of iPhone users plan to stick with the iPhone for their next phone, compared to only 60% of Android owners who plan to buy another Android phone next. Android retention is up from the 47% number it was at during the survey last year, but Android is still losing 33% of its current customers to the iPhone.
Another intersesting piece of information from the survey was that people actually prefer Apple’s smaller screen size over a large one. The survey showed two unlabled scale drawings of an iPhone and a Droid Razr Maxx and 56% said they preferred the smaller screen. However, it’s likely that user’s familiarity with the smaller screen pushed them to side with the current dimensions of the iPhone
