Pixelmator, a beautiful image editor for the Mac that Apple could have designed itself, is about to receive a huge update. Version 2.1 Cherry will be going live “very soon,” and the folks at Pixelmator have revealed that the Cherry update packs full support for the new MacBook Pro’s gorgeous Retina Display.

Adobe has yet to update its Creative Suite for Retina, so Pixelmator will be the first image editing app of its class to be fully optimized for Apple’s newest display technology.

“We’ve been working very hard on it for a few months now, and Cherry is one of the best major Pixelmator updates we have ever put together,” said Pixelmator Team member Saulius. “Yep, Pixelmator 2.1 Cherry is already fully Retina-ready, including all of the user interface elements as well as the image editing engine itself. And, what can I say—Pixelmator on the new MacBook Pro with Retina display (we’ve got a few of those around the office) looks totally incredible.”

A specific release date has not been given, but we wouldn’t be surprised if the update dropped this month. Pixelmator is available in the Mac App Store for only $15, and there’s also a free trial available on the app’s website.
