Open Sites In Chrome From Safari Without Jailbreaking Your iPhone [iOS Tips]

Open In Chrome

I don’t know about you, but I’m a huge fan of the mobile version of Chrome on my iPhone and iPad. I use Chrome for Mac almost exclusively, and having all my bookmarks and browsing history available to me on the go is really the killer feature.

Alex has already shown you how to set Chrome as the default browser if you have a jailbroken iOS device, but what about those of you (like me) who don’t want the hassle of a jailbreak? How can we quickly hop over to Chrome on our iPhone? Turns out, it’s pretty easy.

Over on Jon Abrams’ Tumblr, he has provided a bit of javascript that you can use to create a bookmark in Safari that will pop you over to Chrome, should you want to. Yeah, it’s not a default browser, but it’s way better than what I have been doing, which is tapping into the URL bar in mobile Safari, choosing Select All, then Copy, then navigating to Chrome, and pasting the URL into Chrome’s address bar. Sigh.

Anyway, here’s what you can do to make your own Safari to Chrome bookmark.

First, copy the following bit of code from Abrams’ site into mobile Safari.

javascript:location.href="googlechrome"+location.href.substring(4);

Then bookmark this page, Abrams’ page, or any page, really. Then open Safari’s bookmarks from the little book icon in the upper left of the Safari screen. Tap Edit, then the bookmark you want to become your new “Open in Chrome” bookmark.

Rename it to, oh, I dunno, “Open In Chrome” or something similar, and paste the bit of code you copied into the area where the URL is. Tap out of the Edit Bookmark drop down and you’re ready to go.

Now all you need to do when you’re sent to Safari by default, via a link on Twitter or in an email, is to tap this bookmark, and you’ll go right to Chrome instead. Slick, huh?
