Based on its less than reliable track record, we always take DigiTimes reports with a hefty helping of salt. We wouldn’t advise you to read too much into this one, then, but it’ll certainly be interesting to those of you who are awaiting the new iMac refresh.
According to sources in Apple’s “upstream supply chain,” the Cupertino company’s new all-in-one desktop will enter production this month, ready for its debut “possibly around October.” Despite recent reports, the sources also claim that there is a “high chance” the machine will follow the new MacBook Pro and ship with a high-resolution Retina display.
DigiTimes reports:
Apple’s supply chain reportedly will start supplying components for the mass production of Apple’s upcoming new iMac all-in-one PC in July with the device’s official launch possibly around October, according to sources from upstream supply chain.
The sources also noted that Apple plans to expand Retina display into all the product lines, meaning that the new iMac will have a high chance of featuring Retina display; however, the rumors are not confirmed by Apple.
Apple obviously has plans to extend the Retina display into its entire Mac lineup — just as it has done with iOS devices — as the company looks to “surpass its competitors in terms of screen resolution.” But as you’d expect, Retina displays are significantly more expensive than the “Full HD” displays that Windows PC makers have been pushing.
In addition to these rumors, DigiTimes also reports that we will see redesigned iMacs and Mac Pros in 2013.
