Apple Confirms: New Mac Pro And iMac “Likely” Coming In 2013 [Updated]

No Mac Pro for you, Europeans.

Apple unveiled a pretty disappointing Mac Pro refresh yesterday after its WWDC keynote, and the updated Pro’s lack of new features reinforced to many that Apple was abandoning its pro/desktop users. A new MacBook Pro with incredible specs was also unveiled yesterday, but Apple has payed little attention to its desktop computers recently.

Following whispers that Apple will unveil a totally new iMac and Mac Pro next year, an Apple spokesperson has confirmed that the company is indeed working on new designs for the iMac and Mac Pro that will “likely” debut in 2013.

David Pogue of The New York Times said yesterday that an unnamed Apple executive told him that “new models and new designs” for both the iMac and Mac Pro were in the pipeline for release next year. A new comment from Apple confirms the speculation.

Connie Guglielmo of Forbes reports:

An Apple spokesman just told me that new models and new designs of the Mac Pro, as well as the iMac desktop, are in the works and will likely be released in 2013. That confirms what New York Times columnist David Pogue said yesterday, citing an unnamed Apple executive,  about Apple’s commitment to its desktop computers.

Coincidentally, Apple has also backtracked and removed the “new” label from the updated Mac Pro on its online store. One MacRumors forum member allegedly received an email from CEO Tim Cook himself last night that said, “Our pro customers are really important to us…don’t worry as we’re working on something really great for later next year.”

Such a direct revelation directly from the horse’s mouth is very unlike Apple, and this spokesperson’s comment perhaps signals the company’s new approach under the reign of Tim Cook. “Doubling down on secrecy” indeed, Mr. Cook.

If you’re itching for a new iMac (see update) or Mac Pro, it looks like you’ll be waiting until sometime next year.

Update: Apple reached out to MacRumors to clarify that only the Mac Pro is expected to get a new design next year. From the looks of things, an iMac refresh should be coming before the end of 2012. Stay tuned for more.
