Customize Hidden iTunes Preferences [OS X Tips]

Hidden iTunes Prefs

Don’t worry, you won’t have to copy and paste anything into automator or know any Applescript for this tip. However, I’m sure there’s some of you out there that would like to customize iTunes in the ways this freely downloadable application/script allows you to.

The first thing to do is to head over to Doug’s AppleScripts for iTunes, a site with many tweaks and scripts for the music player app that rules all our iOS devices, at least. The link above will take you directly to the script that allows you to tweak iTunes prefs. Download it, open the disk image, and follow the instructions in the image itself. Be sure to quit iTunes before going through the steps below.

First, find the iTunes Scripts folder, which is in your home folder, then in the Library folder, and then in the iTunes folder. If you don’t have a Scripts folder in there, make one. Be sure to use a capital S on the folder name as well so iTunes knows where to look.

Then, drag the three files in the disk image you downloaded from the Doug’s AppleScripts site. Close the folder and launch iTunes. Once iTunes launches, go up to the Scripts menu, which is a little silhouette of the AppleScript icon. You’ll see Change Hidden Prefs. Select it and you’ll get the window like the screenshot above.

From there you can tweak to your heart’s content. Here is a list of the things you’ll be able to do with this installed:
Show “Library” playlist
Changing view setting is global
Allow half-stars in ratings
Hide “Ping” buttons
Show/hide arrow links — to either search the iTunes Store or search your library
Load complete iTunes Store preview before playing
Create playlists for purchased song collections
Play songs while importing or converting
Create file names with track number
Grid View Search results switch to List View
Option-click zoom button for Mini Player
Show buttons horizontally

This will only work with iTunes 9 or later, and OS X 10.5 or later, so be sure you have those two requirements before trying it out.
