Gadget: Dahon Takes Your iPhone For A Bike Ride

Okay, at first the idea of using your iPhone while biking makes about as much sense as gabbing away on your phone while behind an auto’s steering wheel. But if risk is your middle name and you need your touch-screen on your handlebars, Dahon has just the ticket. The company’s BioLogic iPhone bike case is both waterproof (includes touch-sensitive membrane) and shock-proof. The case also pivots 360-degrees, permitting an on-bike experience in either landscape or portrait mode.

The BioLogic iPhone case ($60, January) can be teamed with Dahon’s ReeCharge system that provides juice for your gadget via the bike’s generator.

    True, this would be dangerous if folks used it for texting and playing games while riding their bikes… BUT, the iPhone/iPod Touch can also play music w/o headphones and can be used as a GPS among other things…. I don’t think I’d pay $60 for it, but I could see how it could be handy.

    For one you can use the Nike software to keep track of your riding stats.

    You might also want to use a GPS program if you are in another city and want to find a place to eat or whatever. Just remember that most GPS programs on iPhones have voice directions so you don’t have to look at the screen.

    There are MANY uses for putting an iPhone on a bike where you might need to look down at it only once in awhile.

    I also put my iPhone on my motorcycle. Again, using voice commands mostly but it is just easier having it mounted than in my pocket as I also have it wired up so it charges at the same time. This can be especially important with the GPS but I don’t always have it fully charged when I head out the door.

    I use mine on my bike all the time with a Ram Mount. Much cheaper, not waterproof though. I use it with the RunKeeper app and track and log my rides.

    I use Trailguru on my bike all of the time. I would not trust my mount off road, but for 10 mile rides around town, it does just fine.

    Saw Rollergen at interbike last week. If you really want to power your gadgets, their 30W generator seems the way to go.
