The Socialmatic Instagram camera concept caused quite the buzz after we posted it last week. After making the rounds on all kinds of blogs and design sites, the concept’s creator, Antonio De Rosa of ADR Studios, decided there was enough interest to try and turn the dream into reality.
De Rosa has launched a campaign on Indiegogo to raise funds for turning the Socialmatic into a real-life camera. The concept is based entirely around Instagram and the idea of physicalizing the way we share on social networks. Will the camera actually see the light of day? That’s up to you.
The Socialmatic comes with 16GB of storage, a 4:3 touchscreen, WiFi, and Bluetooth. There are two lens; one for taking pictures and the other for scanning QR codes. The QR code aspect comes into play after the camera prints out a Polaroid-like photo. Your Instagram account is shown in QR form on the real-life photo’s border, and other Socialmatics can scan the code to follow that user on Instagram. It’s pretty quirky, but De Rosa thinks it could catch on.
In my original Socialmatic post, I remember asking “How long before we see a Kickstarter project that attempts to do something like this?” It turns out that we didn’t have to wait long at all.
De Rosa has launched a campaign on Indiegogo to raise $50,000 for the Socialmatic. If he reaches his goal the concept will be turned into a physical camera for avid Instagramers. De Rosa wants to keep the product cost under $300. The campaign runs until Sunday, June 1st. You can contribute on Indiegogo to help get the ball rolling. If it gets funded, De Rosa is promising a “massive discount” for whoever donates. If the campaign doesn’t reach its goal, everyone who donated will be fully refunded.
