Apple’s next-generation iPhone could finally put an end to fragile smartphones by adopting a flexible OLED display that can bend and twist without so much as a crack. The technology will reportedly come from Samsung — one of Apple’s biggest display partners — which claims to have already received “huge” orders from certain companies.

While Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Kwon Oh-hyun gave no names, he was certainly hinting that one of those companies is Apple, according to The Korea Times.

“We will be mass producing flexible OLED displays from the latter half of this year as the demand from our clients is significant,’’ said Kwon, who calls the shots in Samsung’s parts business.

Kwon declined to mention the companies that Samsung provide these displays to, but according to industry sources, its secrecy is a strong indication that Apple is one of them:

“Apple is the iconic company in the industry that will continue to set the trends. If Samsung finds increasing industry demand for a futuristic product like flexible displays, it’s hard to imagine Apple doesn’t have something to do with it,’’ said an analyst from a U.S.-based investment bank.

Sources have already dubbed the sixth-generation iPhone the “iPhone Yoga,” according to the report.

Kwon believes that flexible OLED displays like those currently being manufactured by Samsung will replace almost all LCDs in mobile devices by 2015. It isn’t just their durability that makes these displays so attractive; they are also said to be thinner and brighter than existing solutions.
