Sparrow for iPhone — the third-party email client that has left Apple’s built-in Mail app redundant on my device — has received another major update today, which introduces a number of helpful features and quashes a handful of bugs.

One thing it doesn’t add, however, is that much-anticipated push support. That’s coming later, but you’ll have to pay for it.

In addition to landscape support while composing emails, Sparrow 1.2 adds a new swipe navigation that makes it super simple to navigate between messages. While reading an email that’s part of a long conversation, you can now swipe up or down to view the other emails within that thread.

You can also edit and create new labels and folders directly within the Sparrow app itself, and you can also now enjoy support for nine languages, including English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Dutch, Russian, and Chinese.

Finally, this update also brings bug fixes for issues with scrolling, drafts, incorrect contacts in autosuggest, and more.

Unfortunately, Sparrow 1.2 still doesn’t introduce push support. According to the Sparrow blog, it’s coming later… but you’ll have to pay yearly for it:

You were more than 16 000 helping us on our Apple quest to get the VoIP privilege.  We can’t thank you enough for your support. Unfortunately, Apple has confirmed that they are not willing to do any exception to the rule and that Sparrow will NOT be granted with the privilege.

This means we’ll have to do Push on our side and that it will be integrated as a yearly subscription into Sparrow’s future update.

That’s disappointing news to Sparrow users. Although the price of that yearly subscription hasn’t been announced, it seems unlikely users are going to pay for a feature the iPhone has built-in.
