Apple's 3D maps service is expected to get its debut in iOS 6.

Following Apple’s acquisition of several mapping companies over the years, it has always seemed inevitable that the company would one day wave goodbye to Google Maps in iOS in favor of its own, in-house service. That’s exactly what will happen when iOS 6 makes its debut later this year, according to one report.

Apple is expected to launch its own maps service, which offers an innovative 3D view mode, allowing you to view city stunning cityscapes in all their glory.

9to5Mac reports:

According to trusted sources, Apple has an incredible headline feature in development for iOS 6: a completely in-house maps application. Apple will drop the Google Maps program running on iOS since 2007 in favor for a new Maps app with an Apple backend. The application design is said to be fairly similar to the current Google Maps program on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, but it is described as a much cleaner, faster, and more reliable experience.

Not only will the new service be cleaner, faster, and more reliable, but it will also boast an incredible 3D mode. Thanks to Apple’s acquisition of C3 Technologies, the company can provide 3D maps that allow users to view buildings and landmarks like never before on their smartphones.

As you can see from the mockup above, the technology kind of makes Google’s satellite view look pretty outdated.

With Apple expected to provide a sneak peek at iOS 6 during WWDC on June 11, its new maps service could be unveiled for the first time. Let’s just hope it’s not exclusive to those in the U.S. like other Apple’s services.
