RunKeeper and Pebble? It's an exercise geek's match made in heaven.

RunKeeper makes fitness apps for a variety of smartphones and is widely considered the premiere platform for tracking and sharing workout information. Today the company announced that it will be the first third-party service to partner with the Pebble watch, a record-breaking Kickstarter project that has collected over $8 million in funding. Pebble sports a customizable interface that can connect with apps and smartphones like the iPhone and Android.

Thanks to the partnership with RunKeeper, Pebble owners will be able to see live fitness data and control RunKeeper without touching their smartphones during a workout.

From the RunKeeper blog:

Well, when Pebble approached us about integrating with RunKeeper, we loved the idea.  We know that many of you are always looking for ways to make your fitness tracking easier, and with Pebble integration, you won’t ever have to pull the phone out of your pocket or armband – you can just see and do everything you need right from your watch (which connects with the phone via bluetooth).  Not to mention that quite a few of you have been requesting it in our support forum as well.

We are pleased to announce that, when the Pebble watches are available, they will be integrated with RunKeeper!  We are also super honored to be the very first app integration partner that Pebble chose to work with.  It will likely be a few months until the watches are ready, but when they are, you will be able to see your in-activity fitness data, start/stop RunKeeper, etc. right from your wrist.

It will be interesting to see how other apps use Pebble’s API to enhance their experiences for iPhone and Android users. The Pebble already looks like the future of watches, but there’s no telling how the product will morph when app developers like RunKeeper start getting involved.

The Pebble can be preordered for $115 in the United States, while international customers will have to pay a little more for shipping and handling. RunKeeper’s free iPhone app can be downloaded in the App Store.
