This Awesome Game Lets You Get In Real-Life Shape By Outjogging iPhone Zombies

Jogging's never boring when the flesh-eating undead are right behind you.
Jogging's never boring when the flesh-eating undead are right behind you.

I hate jogging, but if popular culture has taught me anything, it’s that come the inevitable zombie apocalypse, a trim physique, muscular calves and a five minute mile might be the only thing between me and having my guts stuffed into the rotting maws of some reanimated ghouls. Maybe you won’t run to lose weight, but will you run to save your life?

That’s the idea behind the awesome looking “fitness” app Zombies, Run!. It’s like Runkeeper with a twist: you’re not jogging to burn calories, but running to escape the undead.

Developed by Six To Start, Zombies, Run! is one part fitness app, one part zombie game and one part audiobook. Load up the app and instead of jogging a certain distance or trying to burn a certain number of calories, you instead load up a mission, in which you are jogging to escape zombies, collect supplies, and help survivors live just one more day in the apocalypse.

There’s over 40 runs worth of gameplay according to the developers, and Six To Start continue to add more missions with every patch. There’s even an interval training mode aimed at helping you increase your speed, stamina and distance by having zombies growl through your headphones when you drop below a certain rate.

I’ve tried jogging off and on through the years, and I’ve always ended up stopping because I thought it was boring, but this might actually be the app that gets me jogging again. Too bad these guys can’t come up with a companion program featuring aquatic zombies for my daily laps at the Y, too.

Zombies, Run! can be downloaded for a rather pricey $7.99 here.
