One of the best arcade fighters is now in your pocket.

Forget stunning 3D graphics and fancy gesture-based gameplay; good, old-fashioned 2D arcade fighters are still some of the most entertaining games money can buy. And Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is the latest addition to that genre on iOS. It’s one of the most popular fighting games of all time, featuring 56 legendary characters and an insane, tag-team fighting experience.

This is a full-featured port of the original title released for the Sega Dreamcast way back in 2000. But 12 years on it maintains all of its original appeal, as well as a little extra excitement thanks to its iOS optimizations, including touchscreen controls, a 2-player versus-mode, “unlockable secrets,” and more.

There are 56 characters from the Capcom and Marvel franchises, bringing together Capcom’s greatest comic book heroes and Marvel’s most popular video came fighters. The title hopes to streamline complicated touch control systems with a new “Flick Button” feature, and it allows users to compete with their friends over Bluetooth for intense, head-to-head battles.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is available for just $2.99 between now and May 6 to celebrate the release of The Avengers. What’s more, one price gets you the game on both iPhone and iPad — there’s no need to pay twice to play on both devices. (I’m looking at you, Angry Birds!) That’s an absolute bargain for this game, and I recommend it to anyone who’s even remotely interested in arcade fighters.
