Coca-Cola Recruits Student Behind Steve Jobs Tribute For New Advertising Campaign

A Steve Jobs tribute image that rapidly went viral shortly after Jobs passed away last October has earned one 20-year-old student a job with Coca-Cola. Jonathan Mak, who lives in Hong Kong, was recruited by the beverage giant to design posters for its latest advertising campaign.

Mak designed the image after Steve stepped down as Apple’s CEO back in August 2011 and published it on his blog. Two months later when Steve lost his battle with pancreatic cancer, the image went viral, popping up on social networks, forums, blog, and other news outlets all around the world.

Coca-Cola was so impressed with Mak’s work that the company recruited him for its latest ad campaign, asking him to create a design based on “sharing a Coke.” The result was the image you see above; two hands shaped like Coke’s famous white ribbons, passing a bottle of Coke to one another.

“I think the way I approached the poster is quite similar to the Steve Jobs Apple logo,” Mak told Creativity Online. “These kinds of images are quite appropriate in advertising. It takes a second to get it and then there’s an ‘aha’ moment.”

Mak, who is currently studying at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, said his job with Coca-Cola was simply a “happy accident.” When asked whether he’d like to go into advertising when he graduates, Mak replied, “I just want to do good work that can affect people the way the Steve Jobs-Apple logo did.”
