Apple Testing iPhone With 1GB of RAM Internally [Rumor]

While we know a new iPhone is coming this year out of Cupertino, we don’t know exactly when that iPhone will launch or with what specs, but what we do know is that Apple is testing prototypes of the new iPhone in its labs. This morning, a new report sheds some information on the new iPhone that Apple is testing, along with a new iPod touch.

9to5mac reports that Apple has started internally testing the new iPhone / iPhone 5 inside of a case made to disguise it and make it look like an iPhone 4S.

Inside the prototype’s guts, Apple is reportedly testing the A5X processor that was first included in the new iPad.

According to the report, the A5X being tested in the new iPhone does have a different S5L8945X architecture that makes more sense for a handset. It also includes 1GB of RAM.

These are interesting spec bumps that some might call overkill. After all, the reason the new iPad has an A5X processor and 1GB of RAM is largely to drive the new retina display. Could Apple be planning some new processor-and-memory hungry tech for the iPhone 5, or are they just aiming to have hardware parity for devs?

Along with the new iPhone, Apple is also expected to introduce an update to its iPod touch line later this year. According to the report, Apple has begun work on the new iPod, testing it internally. It’s been given the label iPod 5,1 in Apple’s internal systems.

As for when the new iPhone is launching is still a bit of a mystery. With the introduction of the iPhone 4S, Apple went off their usual WWDC launch date in June, to a launch it at a special event in October. It’s not clear if Apple will do the same for the new iPhone.

In my mind, Apple will introduce iOS 6 at WWDC in June, give developers a few months to develop apps and workout bugs, and then introduce it with the new iPhone in the fall. However, only time will tell.
