Apple Puts Out Java 6 for Leopard Only — Pathetic.

Apple’s support of Java in Mac OS X continues to be totally pathetic, as Alex Popescu points out.

I’m usually calm and trying to understand the decisions some are making. But this is f%^$% unbelievable: Apple has released a developer preview of Java6, but it is meant only for 10.5.1 or later. Are they kidding me? A guy has been able to build Java6 for Mac by his own, has packaged it for both Tiger and Leopard, and Apple comes out 1 month later with a 10.5.1 only? That’s incredible arrogant.

Yeah, and it’s only for 64-bit Macs, so first-gen Intel iMacs, MacBook Pros and MacBooks are out of look. BOO. When a hobbyist can put together more useful and broad implementations of a freaking API than you can, it’s time to wonder why you even bother. Come on, Apple. What’s the deal?

Unbelievable: Apple releases Java6, but”¦ « mindstorms

Maybe you should wait till they OFFICIALLY announce that it is only for leopard. They may simply be giving out a developer PREVIEW, as in, not finished. That by no means guarantees that there will be no update for tiger..

That’s not really a fair comparision. What Apple is doing is not the same as compiling up a JDK with X11 support; they have to integrate Java with Cocoa and Quartz and all that other Apple-specific operating-system stuff that the free-software version of Java has no support for. I imagine they may also want to do some testing to try to avoid breaking too many existing applications. And, as mentioned above, they may have higher priorities and not want to delay Leopard development as a whole until the Java 6 work is done.

If you don’t need the Mac OS X stuff (e.g., server-side web development) then presumably the JDK released by a guy will suit you fine so Apple’s tardiness is not an issue.

“they have to integrate Java with Cocoa and Quartz and all that other Apple-specific operating-system stuff”

None of that stuff, none of it, is dependent on 64 bit or Leopard. Not only that, but all the stuff you describe above is already done. It has been for years. Apple released a developer preview version of Java 6 for Tiger a year ago. This is plain and simple Apple being so arrogant as to release code that requires people to upgrade hardware and software if they want the latest version of Java. The days of Apple management, not the JDK developers, caring about Java are over.

I run Java for the server side applications, so the X11 stuff doesn’t bother me, and I think its a breath of fresh air that soylatte (The hobbyist Java Petemortensen is talking about) is out there. I don’t have to depend on Apple for a working version of Java. Thank God because Apple is doing a piss poor job of supporting it. And with no roadmap, well…

Soylatte will almost certainly get the Cocoa stuff figured out, and Apple will be the laughing stock of the Java community. Landon Fuller, who is to be commended, is going to single handedly hand Apple their hats on this one.

As of today the 19th, I haven’t seen any Java 6 for my Macbook Pro + Leopard 1.5.1, but there is a Java for my Mac Mini PowerPC with Tiger. So for me it’s the other way around – java for Tiger but not for Leopard.

    “out of look”?

    O_o

I have to take issue with the headline “Apple Puts Out Java 6 for Leopard Only.”

A more accurate headline would be “Apple Puts Out Java 6 Preview for Leopard Only.” I gujess that doesn’t sound as exciting.

This is a developer seed, not a release. If we can find out that the final release is going to only be Leopard or only be for 64-bit chips…well those ARE things worth complaining about. Correct me if I’m wrong, though, but we DON’T know any of that, do we?

Until that does happen, all you’re doing is complaining about test versions. They’re under no obligation to release everything they’re working on all at once.

From the SoyLatte website: “Due to bugs in 10.4’s compiler, building the sources currently requires a Mac OS X 10.5 machine.”

Dude, INCREDIBLY arrogant, and not “incredible arrogant”, and out of LUCK not “out of look”. Learn how to spell, learn how to write, then learn to criticize properly, then find something worth writing about. We honestly don’t care that you can’t run Java 6 on Tiger, next time, if you don’t have anything to write about DON’T write anything, instead of making up shit.

I can’t believe they let frigtards like this write blogs…

  12. Hanii Puppy says:

Since this is only a developer preview, I’d say wait until the official release. It’s like the ipod- it was originally only for one operating system – especially in it’s infancy – but it was expanded to encompass others.

  13. Lance says:

This development can be summed up in one comment from Steve Jobs himself…

Jobs: “Java’s not worth building in. Nobody uses Java anymore. It’s this big heavyweight ball and chain.”

Of course, this was in reference to the lack of Java for the iPhone, but it makes it obvious that Java is not high on Steve’s (or Apple’s) priority list.
