Following this morning’s comment from Apple CEO Tim Cook that the company is absolutely “thrilled” with its launch weekend sales for the new iPad, AT&T has confirmed record single-day sales and activations for the new tablet.

On Friday, March 16, AT&T set a new single-day record for its iPad sales and activations, demonstrating robust demand for the new iPad on the nation’s largest 4G network, covering nearly 250 million people.

Tim Cook said that his company had a “record weekend” for the new iPad this morning, but Apple has not given official numbers yet.

It will be interesting to see a more detailed breakdown of how many LTE iPad models AT&T sold versus the WiFi-only flavors sold elsewhere. Verizon has yet to give official launch weekend numbers, but expect there to be good competition between the two carriers. The Verizon iPad has some significant draws over AT&T, including the ability to use Personal Hotspot and an AT&T Micro-SIM. We’ll let you know when more sales numbers are given.
