The new iPad’s Retina display “will have a huge impact on games”, one developer told Cult of Mac this morning.

James van Dyne of Yokohama, Japan-based indie dev outfit Sugoisoft told us:

We’re very excited by the announcement today and can’t wait to demo some app ideas using the Retina display and 1080p camera.

The Retina display will have a huge impact on games, and once you throw in the ability to stream 1080p to the new Apple TV, we should be seeing some major game companies start to develop original games for the iPad which make use of the Apple TV as the main display and the iPad as a secondary screen, very much like the Wii U is doing. We will then also see more use in the medical field with X-rays and other imaging being clearer which was a big complaint about the original display.

I see an exciting space with business apps and the new camera. Apps like Evernote will be able to capture even better copies of documents and turn the iPad into a hand held scanner. There are then also fields such as estate/letting agents who we will see using iPads more and more to enter property details and take photos to better aid in their work flow.

Smile! It's the new iPad Retina display

James also expressed the frustrations of many who live in locations where local cell telephony operators don’t yet offer any kind of LTE data service:

I’m personally not that bothered about LTE as it’s not available everywhere, but it will certainly push carriers to roll out the upgrade faster and wider which will be good for everybody and I think is an example of Apple pushing forward the the basics as they have done with Firewire or Thunderbolt.

Whilst some people maybe disappointed that it looks the same, I feel the retina display alone will make this iPad a must have and you must remember that its only $100 more than the remaining iPad 2 on sale. The real revolution now will focus on getting all of Apple’s devices to talk, sync and mirror with each other further. Airplay and iCloud are big steps towards this and I envision this to continue down the line.

I think the update to the Apple TV is an important stepping stone. The UI is clearly now designed to look more like iOS with a grid of large icons and leads the way to Apple allowing more 3rd party apps and a possible app store which has to be part of the long term goal. It should also finally kill off a lot of the projector market as for $99 and a $1000 TV you can mirror any of your Apple devices with a single click – finally no more looking for the correct cable and messing with screen resolutions.

We’re gathering additional developer reactions, so more posts with more opinions will follow soon.

What do you think? Is James right about the impact of the Retina display on gaming?
