Pentax Unveils Compact K-01 Mirrorless Camera

Pentax just announced a new interchangeable lens digital camera, the K-01. Like a lot of mirrorless cameras these days, the idea is to create something smaller than a DSLR, without sacrificing image quality or the flexibility to swap lenses when you need to.

That said, the K-01 is striking because it’s so much bigger than many of its rivals in the mirrorless market.

That’s mainly because Pentax used its existing K lens mount. Great if you already have a collection of K lenses you want to use on this new body, but not without the unfortunate effect of bulking out the camera.

Chunkier than most

The tech specs include a 16MP APS-C sensor, HD video, maximum ISO of 25600, and 81 autofocus points. It will come with a 40mm f2.8 lens, which Pentax says is the world’s thinnest. Camera and lens will cost around $900 and be available in March.

It’s worth taking a quick look at this interview at the British Journal of Photography with Pentax’s UK manager Jonathan Martin. He’s asked repeatedly about the size of the camera, and says this model’s appeal lies in its design. He adds: “a lot of Pentax users that have been waiting for a K-mount mirrorless product.”

Here are some more pics. What do you think? A design classic, or step backwards?
