Grand Theft Auto 3 Hits The App Store, And It’s Better Than You Ever Imagined

I’ve been so excited for the iOS port of Grand Theft Auto 3 that as soon as I opened my eyes this morning, I reached over to my iPhone and checked the App Store to see if it had arrived. (Sad, I know.) As promised, it was there, and having played it for a little while this morning, I can assure you it’s better than you ever imagined.

The iOS release of Grand Theft Auto 3 celebrates the title’s tenth anniversary, but this game certainly doesn’t feel like it’s ten years old — certainly not on iOS. Rockstar Games has updated its visuals to take advantage of Apple’s Retina display devices and its dual-core A5 processor.

The results are incredible. Sure, it’s exactly the same game you enjoyed on the PlayStation 2 all those years ago, but now it’s in your pocket, and you can play it anywhere.

Rockstar has also done a great job of adapting the title to virtual controls. I had concerns that the lack of a control pad may let the game down a little, but the on-screen controls work wonderfully. Check out this video of Grand Theft Auto 3 on the iPad 2 from TouchArcade:

If you’re a fan of Grand Theft Auto games, you must get Grand Theft Auto 3 for your iOS device — you certainly won’t be disappointed. It’s compatible with the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, fourth-generation iPod touch, iPad, and iPad, and it’s a universal app so you only have to purchase the title once at $4.99 to play it on all of your devices.

What do you think of Grand Theft Auto 3 on iOS?
