Apple Issues Firmware Update 7.6 for AirPort Base Station And Time Capsule

Following a firmware update for its MacBook Pro yesterday, Apple has issued a new firmware update for its AirPort Extreme Base Station and Time Capsule devices, which fixes a number of issues, including a problem with audio streaming through AirPlay.

Firmware Update 7.6 is available to download now for all 802.11n AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme, and Time Capsule devices, with the following fixes:

This update for all 802.11n AirPort Express, 802.11n AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule models provides fixes for the following:

  • An issue with performance on overlapping wireless networks
  • An issue with AirPlay audio streaming
  • An issue with configuring multiple entries for DNS servers

To install the new firmware update on your device, you’ll need AirPort Utility on your Mac or iOS device. Apple recommends using AirPort Utility 5.5.3 or later.

Painless install from iOS.  In fact, was able to do something on iOS I couldn’t do on Airport Utility for Mac:  update two different airports at the same time (one was an extender, the other an airport express acting as a wireless device for a pc).

For me, my brand new Apple Airport Extreme would only broadcast on the 5GHz band. 2.4GHz would broadcast its name, but that’s it, so iPhones/iPod Touches/Windows desktops of mine couldn’t connect, because they only use 2.4GHz. The only device that was compatible with the 5GHz band was our iPads. The problem was that we have a wireless security camera system, and it broadcasts on 2.4GHz. I had to remove it. It took a month to figure it out.

This happened less than a week ago. Just bought a new security system that can be wired. Kinda bummed, but glad this issue is fixed. I just updated, and I am about to connect my old camera system back up to see if it still interferes.

Win7, Airport Utility for Windows 5.5.3. Airport Extreme. First several tries failed to download the update. Clicking the “update” button resulted in no results at all – no action, no warning, no error … after I went thru the setup process (entering the password for the AE) then the link worked. Not sure if this was coincidence or whether it needed somehow to “see” the password.

Updated via iPhone app. Very nice. Unfortunately, my Internet connection slows or drops completely every so often after updating my Time Capsule to 7.6. Even more strange, my wireless devices are faster than my wired PC/Mac.
