Users Report Find My Friends Service Outages And Sign Up Problems

Well if you had any doubts about this past weekends iPhone 4S sales you can rest easy it was a blockbuster weekend for Apple and all the carriers. Millions of customers are out trying all the new features in iOS 5, on their iPhone 4S and in iCloud. It also looks like a lot of you are trying to find your friends with Apple’s new Find My Friends app and related services. Well it looks like this morning that the service is experiencing activation problems.

I got wind of this problem from an associate of mine and so I decided to give Find My Friends a try this morning. It didn’t work and before this morning I hadn’t been getting requests from friends that they claimed to have sent, but I suddenly did today inside of the App as well as an email. So finally with one of those requests in hand I gave it a try. However I didn’t get very far:

Subsequently I was sent to appleid.apple.com and I tried to verify my Apple ID. No luck there either. The app launched Safari for me, I tried logging in and I got an”An unknown error has occurred.”  Oops no friend finding for me today.

Finally undaunted I tried again and I got:

No luck. Right now Find My Friends isn’t finding anyone or at least providing the services or information I need to find them. Thanks anyways Find My Friends.

I’m going to reach out to Apple to find out if there is a way to check the status of the Find My Friends service similar to how you can check the status of iCloud. You can check iCloud services status at Apple’s website, but it doesn’t get granular enough to tell you what is going on with every service – now it reports all green for iCloud.

I’m sure that Apple will work the kinks out of Find My Friends and a few outages will occur from time to time, but I hope they work out the kinks soon because everyone needs to find  their friends now and then right?

My AppleID is completely borked since upgrading my iPhone 3GS to iOS5 – I’ve experienced all the same problems mentioned in your post and am currently unable to sign into the iTunes Store.

Let’s hope they don’t have as many site failures as Cult of Mac. ;-)

I wish Find My Friends was more accurate than just the street address. It would be more helpful to know where my friends are when I’m at the mall or in a store.

Is there any reason you wouldn’t just wipe the phone and restore from backup?  It seems no matter what you’ve done that a full restore would fix it unless it’s a hardware issue.

Using Find My Friends, I was able to find my wife at the head of a very long line at a local cafe about to place her order. I quickly opened up iMessage and texted her “Club Sandwich”. Just in time… we ate together.

You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this topic to be really something which I think I would never understand. It seems too complicated and very broad for me. I am looking forward for your next post.

The problem is that I can’t sign into the iTunes store from either my phone or the desktop. So I’m not sure how a phone restore would fix the problem – although, having said that, I can’t think of anything else, so may very well give that a try! Thanks for the suggestion!
