Apple Backtracks on AppleCare+ Must Be Purchased With Your iPhone Policy

Apple’s made another good PR decision this week in regards to AppleCare+ and the policy about the requirement that you had to buy AppleCare+ at the same time as your iPhone 4S or iPhone 4 8GB model. If you are a long time Apple customer like I am you were surprised to find out that you had to buy the two together since this isn’t the norm for AppleCare. Usually you could add AppleCare to any Apple hardware product as long as it was still under the first year warranty.

The change caused a stir among Apple’s customers so the company changed the policy, but only until November 14, 2011.

If you want to get AppleCare+ for your new iPhone 4S or the 8GB iPhone 4 you’ll need to order it before the above date. According to Apple all you need to do is:

How to get AppleCare+

AppleCare+ must be purchased together with your new iPhone. To buy it, add it to your shopping cart during the checkout process when you purchase your new iPhone.

Note: AppleCare+ will be available through November 14, 2011, to customers who pre-ordered iPhone 4 (8GB) and iPhone 4S. After you receive your new iPhone, contact us at 1-800-275-2273 to purchase AppleCare+.

If you haven’t ordered a phone yet you can order a copy online here. If you have ordered a phone and you are expecting delivery today or later the follow the instructions above, but if I were you I’d wait until next week!

Why can’t you purchase applecare+ before the 12 month warranty is up?

New Apple policy. Apple’s decided to change the game. I can understand why since it covers accidental damage now.

What about if you bought them both together in a pre-order and Apple care says delivery date on Oct. 14th and the iPhone4s ship date is Oct. 28th? will Appple Care start on the 14th or the day that Apple charges my account???????

Because if you get your iPhone, drop it in the toiled a month later, they don’t want you to go and order it online just because you wound up needing it.  You either get when the phone is new and perfect condition, or you don’t get it at all.  Makes sense.

    You should be okay.

This is really confusing since I talked to Applecare last Friday and they said that Applecare+ could also be applied to phones still under the one year warranty… I was planning on getting it for my phone I bought in June… now I’m not sure I can!

Verizon didn’t offer me Applecare+ what should I do? the phone should be arriving today.

Also strange is if you look at the Applecare+ page it says “AppleCare+ must be purchased together with new covered equipment. See AppleCare+ Terms and Conditions for complete product details.” but if you look at the terms and conditions that are linked they clearly state “You must purchase the Plan while your original iPhone is within Apple’s One Year Limited warranty.” So the website and the Terms and Conditions they reference say two different things.  Personally, I plan on bringing my iPhone 4 into Apple and trying to get Applecare+ anyways

But insurance providers should be forced to cover preexisting conditions!!!

    (It’s a joke, don’t get all political.)

This is good news to me. I pre-ordered my iphone at an att store a week ago. They sold me on the monthly insurance that would repair or replace my phone if broken, lost or stolen, with a $199 deductible. When I asked about applecare+, no one on the sales staff or the manager knew what I was talking about. I seriously felt like maybe I was delusional. This is good news indeed.

Can anyone tell me if i need to get this or if i can in the UK as i have pre ordered my 4s already?
